<< KARKOSA >> http://www.karkosa.co.uk/ https://www.instagram.com/officialkarkosa/ https://www.facebook.com/officialkarkosa/ https://twitter.com/officialkarkosa 영국에서 주목 받고 있는 언더그라운드 록 밴드 카르코사는, 한국에서 대형스타가 될 강력한 조짐을 보이고 있다. 2014년, 버밍엄 출신의 형제 마이클 워녹과 잭 워녹은 의기투합하여 밴드를 결성한다. 리드 기타 톰 러쉬튼과 베이스 라이언 트롯, 키보드 윌 클루스가 합류하여 밴드가 완성된 후 여러 싱글을 작업하여 온라인에 유통하기 이른다. 밴드에게 지대한 영향을 준 팀은 캣피쉬 앤 더 보틀맨(Catfish and the Bottlemen), 아마존스(The Amazons), 로얄 블러드(Royal Blood). 카르코사는 헤비한 기타 리프와 섬세한 신스, 킬러스(The Killers) 스타일의 독백이 어우러져 완벽한 청춘기의 송가를 만들어냈다. 2017년에 몇 곡의 싱글을 선보인 카르코사에게 2018년은 중요한 한 해가 되었다. 일단 버밍엄 뮤직 어워드에서 “2018년에 주목해야 할 밴드”와 “베스트 인디 밴드” 두 부문에 노미네이트된다. 그리고 2018 ‘Isle of Wight’ 페스티벌의 ‘HotVox’ 온라인 경연에서 5,000 팀이 넘는 경쟁자를 제치며 1등을 거머쥔다. 또한 ‘BBC Introducing’를 통해 소개되며 서포트를 받는데 DJ 스티브 켈리는 다음과 같이 말하며 카르코사에게 큰 찬사를 보냈다. “제 동료 DJ 중 많은 사람이 ‘Sheffield’를 좋아해요. 과장 없이 말할게요. 제 일생일대의 애창곡 ‘Hotel California’와 비견할만한 멋진 기타 리프예요.” 이들의 곡은 영향력 있는 다양한 스포티파이 플레이리스트에 수록되며 저력을 보여줬으며 ‘Sheffield’는 2만번 이상 재생되고 유투브에 현재까지 12,000명이 보았다. 더욱이 2018년은 그 누구도 예상하지 못했던 한국에서의 바이럴로 인해 밴드에게 더욱 특별한 한해가 되었다. 인스타그램을 통한 마이클의 자체홍보로 만난 몇몇 한국 팬으로 인해, 카르코사의 공식 팬클럽이 형성되고 단 24시간 안에 카르코사 SNS 계정에 2,500명이 넘는 한국 팔로워가 증가하였다. 이런 반응에 응답하고자 밴드는 그간 발매했던 싱글들을 모아 [Red Hoodie]라는 EP 앨범을 만들고 한국에서 발매한다. 이 앨범으로 인해 한국에서 인지도는 더욱 커진다. 카르코사는 10월에 한국을 방문해 2개의 공연을 한다. 이들은 주로 팝 밴드나 록 아이돌이 받는 융숭한 환대를 얻었는데, 이것은 이제 막 떠오르고 있는 인디 밴드에게 흔치 않은 일이다. 팬들은 공항까지 마중나와 카르코사를 환영했으며 첫 번째 공연이 끝난 후 30분 정도로 예상되었던 밋 앤 그릿 시간은 총 3시간 가까이 이어졌다. 첫 번째 공연 티켓은 5분 만에 매진되었고, 2번째 공연인 한국 쇼케이스 페스티벌 ‘잔다리 페스타’ 중 가장 많은 관객이 들어선 성공적인 쇼케이스를 선보였다. 이처럼 한국 팬들의 열광적인 반응은 많은 매니지먼트, 레코드 레이블의 관심을 끌었다. 이중에서 한국의 독립 레이블 ‘비라인 레코즈'와 계약을 마친 카르코사는 2019년 초 단독공연과 녹음을 위해 한국을 다시 찾을 예정이다. 2019년은 카르코사를 위한 무대가 될 것이다. Birmingham based rock band Karkosa are making waves in the UK and have the potential to be Korea’s next big thing. Karkosa formed in Birmingham in 2014 by brothers Michael (vocals & guitar) and Jack (drummer) Warnock. After recruiting Tom Rushton on lead guitar, Ryan Trott on bass and Will Clews on keyboard, the band wrote and recorded a batch of singles which they self released online. Heavily inspired by Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Amazons and Royal Blood, Karkosa blend heavy guitar riffs, subtle synths and Killers-esque monologues, to produce the perfect adolescent anthems. After releasing a handful of singles in 2017, 2018 has proven to be a pivotal year for the quintet. At home Karkosa were nominated for “Best Indie Band” and "One to Watch 2018" by the Birmingham Music Awards and won the HotVox 2018 Isle of Wight online competition beating out over 5000 other bands. They also received support and airplay from the likes of BBC Introducing, where they were on the receiving end of some high compliments from DJ Steve Kelly who said "Quite a few of my fellow presenters loved your song Sheffield. No exaggeration, but the guitar work on it is up there with Hotel California, which is my favourite track ever". Karkosa’s songs have been added to numerous influential Spotify playlists and their song “Sheffield” has been played over 20,000 times on Spotify and 12,000 times on Youtube so far. Further afield 2018 became even more memorable as the band unexpectedly went viral in South Korea. After hitting instagram to promote his band Michael made contact with some Korean fans, 24 hours later there was an official Korean fan club created and the band had gained over 2,500 new followers across instagram and twitter. Wanting to build upon the buzz they were generating in Korea the band packaged their singles into an EP titled Red Hoodie for a special Korea only release and the clamor for them to play in Korea began to grow. In October Karkosa headed out to Seoul for a pair of shows. The band received a welcome usually reserved for pop and rock idols, not young up and coming indie bands. Fans gathered at the airport to meet them when they arrived and a meet & greet session that was expected to last 30 minutes turned into 3 hours. Their first show, a headlining gig sold out in under five minutes and their second performance was a packed showcase as part of the country’s top showcase festival, Zandari Festa. The enthusiasm of their Korean fans caught the attention of management and record labels, and after signing to Seoul based independent Beeline Records, Karkosa are set to return to the peninsula early 2019 for more headline shows and recording sessions.
